Of the many player-made creations that have been put together in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom recently, one player’s flying battle mechs are proving particularly popular. Whether it be tricky puzzles or hordes of Bokoblins, Tears of the Kingdom offers plenty of tools for tackling problems in unconventional, open-ended ways, and as the game nears four months on the market, the fanbase shows no sign of running out of ideas.
In Tears of the Kingdom, Link’s new Ultrahand ability makes it possible to fuse objects together for different purposes. Such objects include the various Zonai devices players can collect, like fans, wheels, wings, cannons, and much more, that can be combined to create all sorts of unique and functional machines. It is common for these to be used to create different types of vehicles in Tears of the Kingdom for faster and easier travel across Hyrule. For players who want to make combat easier, however, there’s also the option to build autonomous drones and robots to take care of enemies for them.
A recent example comes courtesy of the HyruleEngineering subreddit, a popular hub for inventive builds in Tears of the Kingdom, where user GalileoPotato showed off a pair of killer mechs they dubbed the Valkyries. Made of a mix of Zonai fans, stabilizers, lasers, and shock emitters, these battle machines can be seen swiftly decimating a group of Bokoblins while Link watches from a safe distance. Not only are the drones agile both in the air and on the ground, but relentless too, as can be seen when they gang up on a Boss Bokoblin and pin it against a wall, unable to escape being electrocuted by their shock emitters.
What makes GalileoPotato’s build especially impressive is its economical design, as only 10 parts are needed to build one Valkyrie. The Reddit user also provided a full list of parts and assembly instructions for those who want their own arsenal of autonomous murder mechs. The one downside is that these drones won’t come cheap, as a single one requires 127 Zonaite if players are short on parts. In such cases, a trip to either a few Zonai Device Dispensers or one of the Zonaite deposits in the Depths will likely be necessary.
The Valkyries are the latest example of players building mechs in Tears of the Kingdom. Pretty much since day one, would-be engineers have flexed their skills putting together all sorts of working battle machines. These builds have varied in functionality and deadliness, yet all of them illustrate how impressive the game’s open-ended systems are, which make it possible to merge a bunch of random Zonai devices into precise instruments of monster destruction.
