Spyro Reignited Trilogy Collection Hits Incredible Sales Milestone | Games Rants

  • The remastered Spyro Reignited Trilogy has achieved a major global sales milestone, selling over 10 million units across all platforms.
  • The original Spyro the Dragon game on PlayStation 1 sold five million copies, and the remastered trilogy has doubled that number.
  • After the success of the remastered trilogy, there is speculation that something new might be revealed for Spyro’s 25th anniversary, but nothing has been confirmed yet.

In celebration of Spyro’s 25th anniversary, Toys for Bob and Activision revealed that the remastered Spyro Reignited Trilogy collection has crossed an incredible global sales milestone. The original Spyro the Dragon game released 25 years ago on PlayStation 1, developed by Insomniac Games, who would then develop two sequels for the same console. The franchise would then change developers after the original trilogy on PS1, with titles of varying quality being released over the two and a half decades of Spyro’s history. The most recent title released in this classic franchise would be 2018’s Spyro Reignited Trilogy.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy follows in the footsteps of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, where Toys for Bob remastered all three original PlayStation games, while revitalizing their visuals and game worlds. The remaster also attempts to remain faithful in its content of the original titles while also boasting some quality-of-life improvements to make for a smoother experience. As a result, the trilogy received a lot of generally favorable reviews, with fans and critics praising both of these aspects. Nearly five years after its original release and its port on both Switch and PC, the trilogy has managed to cross a very impressive sales milestone.

To start off the franchise’s “Spyroversary” month, the official Twitter account revealed the sales figures for Spyro Reignited Trilogy, where it has managed to cross 10 million units sold globally, across all four platforms. This figure is based on reports that count the game’s digital and physical sales, with the latter being provided by retail partners with Activision. While it doesn’t list which platform contributed the most sales, the original release of Spyro Reignited Trilogy saw it sell the best on PlayStation 4 compared to Xbox One.

The Spyro franchise’s best-selling game would be the original PlayStation 1 title, where it managed to sell five million copies in its lifetime. Based on this figure, the remastered trilogy has managed to outsell the original game twice over. Considering that the trilogy is nearly half a decade old and that it got ported to four different systems, the number of units adds up. Many Spyro fans posted how much nostalgia they had regarding the original trilogy and how the remasters helped bring it into the modern day.

The Spyro franchise has been in a bit of a dormant state after the trilogy remaster, with the only notable thing regarding Spyro in the last few years was him being added to Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled back in 2019. While there was some hints that Spyro might be making a comeback this year, nothing has materialized yet. With the franchise’s 25th anniversary later this September, maybe something could be revealed, but this is just speculation for now.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy is available now on Nintendo Switch, PC, PS4, and Xbox One.
