  • Nintendo’s next console, rumored to be called the Switch 2, may have a new camera feature that could enable VR capabilities of some kind.

  • Leaks suggest that the next Nintendo console may use an LCD screen instead of higher quality OLED screens.

The Switch 2, or whatever Nintendo‘s next console ends up being called, may have a new camera feature that allows for VR capabilities of some kind. Nintendo has yet to officially reveal its next-generation console to the masses, but it is expected to launch the device at some point in 2024.

While the Wii U was a general sales failure, the Switch has been a huge success for Nintendo, breaking sales records and becoming the third best-selling video game console of all time to date, right behind the DS and PS2. Switch console sales have remained strong even six years into its lifespan, though things are admittedly slowing down compared to its biggest years. Nintendo still has some big games in the pipeline for the Switch, but the Big N is also turning its attention to its next-generation console, whatever that may be.

Rumors have been floating around about the next Nintendo console, with some claiming it will essentially be a successor to the Switch and function as a home console/handheld hybrid device. Official details on the next Nintendo console remain scarce, but a potential new leak has suggested that it will have new camera functionality. The leak comes from an Atlus insider who is “not sure if it’s VR.” Nintendo fans should take this information with a grain of salt for now.

This isn’t the only recently leaked detail about Nintendo’s next-generation console. Another leak has claimed that the next Nintendo console will use an LCD screen, as opposed to the higher quality OLED screens. Presumably, this would allow Nintendo to cut down on the manufacturing costs for its new console, in turn making it so it can be sold at a lower price and therefore be more competitive with the likes of the PS5 and Xbox Series X.

As far as official information about the console goes, there’s not much out there. Fans know that the console is in the works in some capacity and that it won’t be released this year. Nintendo has also confirmed that Nintendo Accounts will transfer from the Switch, meaning the new console will have some account continuity for the first time in Nintendo’s history. It’s unclear if this means purchases will transfer to the new console as well, but those details will be ironed out after it’s actually revealed to the masses.

When the next Nintendo console is revealed, it will be interesting to see just how many of the leaks about it turn out to be true, and which ones are revealed to be fake. Barring any unexpected reveals happening before the end of the year, fans can expect Nintendo to reveal and release its new console at some point next year.
