The developers behind the critically acclaimed indie RPG Sea of Stars have confirmed that they are hard at work on a sizable DLC expansion for the game, following its widely successful release on Xbox Game Pass. Originally hinted at during the Kickstarter campaign for Sea of Stars, this DLC is already in development following the base game’s launch last week.
Sea of Stars takes place in the same universe as developer Sabotage’s previous game, The Messenger, which was released in 2018. After a successful Kickstarter campaign, Sea of Stars was released at the end of August 2023 to wide acclaim from critics and fans alike, becoming one of the highest rated Xbox Game Pass games of the year. While the base game is already full of rich story content for players to enjoy, the final stretch goal of the Kickstarter campaign promised even more: a “fully-fledged side adventure,” to be developed after the game’s launch and released as free DLC for backers.
Sabotage has since confirmed that this DLC, titled Throes of the Watchmaker, is already in development, with half the studio’s team dedicated to the project while the other half starts working on an entirely new game. As of now, little has been revealed about the direction this new DLC’s story will take, but the title indicates that it will heavily feature the Watchmaker, a mysterious entity whom players will know from the Wheels minigame in Sea of Stars.
The stretch goal originally promising the DLC offers further clues as to its possible contents. The goal description stated that the DLC would “expand even more on the world of Sea of Stars,” as well as the overarching narrative tying all of Sabotage’s games together. This means that players can probably expect more insight into the connections between Sea of Stars and The Messenger, even though the two games are seemingly set thousands of years apart from one another. In addition to the narrative content, Throes of the Watchmaker also promises to deliver more of the engaging turn-based combat introduced in Sea of Stars.
At time of writing, there has been no release date announced for Throes of the Watchmaker, although the Kickstarter goal describing the DLC indicated that it would require “multiple months of dev,” implying that fans will have to wait a while for Sea of Stars‘ expansion. Fortunately, the base game Sea of Stars experience features hours of content for players to explore, so fans will have plenty to tide them over while they wait for updates on the DLC.
Sea of Stars is available for PC, PS4, PS5, Switch, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
